Capi vs YNAB 2026: an honest side-by-side

By Daniil Kozin · ex-banker · Florianópolis · Updated 19 May 2026

Capi is cheaper, Telegram-native, and multi-currency. YNAB is the discipline gold standard with the envelope methodology and bank sync in three countries. The right answer depends on whether you want a method to follow or an inbox that notices. Read the table, then pick.

What is the quick verdict?

Pick YNAB if you want the rule-of-four envelope methodology, you bank in the US, UK, or Canada, and $109 per year fits your situation. The community and the teaching material are best-in-class.

Pick Capi if you live across currencies, you want input by chat or voice rather than tap, you split money with a partner, and you want a Telegram-first workflow at $0 to $99 per year.

I am the founder of Capi, so this comparison cannot be neutral. I have tried to be fair where YNAB is stronger and explicit where Capi is. If you spot a place I got YNAB wrong, write to me and I will correct it.

How do the prices compare over 3 years?

YNAB costs $327 over three years if you stay on the annual plan. Capi costs $0 on the free tier, $209 on Core annual, or $297 on Together annual over the same window. Capi Free is genuinely permanent, not a trial that flips to paid. Most solo users sit on Free or upgrade to Core for the chat advisor and multi-currency conversion features.

Which one supports multiple currencies?

Capi does, YNAB does not. YNAB locks each budget to one currency. If you earn in USD and spend in BRL, you either run two budgets and reconcile by hand, or you pre-convert at a planning rate and lose the actual FX detail. Capi commits each transaction in its native currency at entry time, then rolls up to your chosen main currency using rates captured at the moment of the entry. Seven currencies supported natively (USD, EUR, BRL, ARS, MXN, RUB, GBP), with learned aliases for crypto rails like Bybit P2P and Mercado Pago.

How does each handle couples?

YNAB allows two people to share one budget via the same login. Both see every transaction. There is no per-person attribution, no privacy layer, and no "this purchase is mine and off the shared view" mechanic. Capi Together at $99 per year adds a household with per-person attribution, the #mine flag for private purchases, per-person month splits, and joint goals with contribution tracking. The trade-off: Capi Together is newer and the surface is smaller than YNAB's mature shared-account flow.

What about methodology, envelopes, and the rule of four?

YNAB enforces a method. Every dollar gets a job before it gets spent. The Four Rules are: give every dollar a job, embrace your true expenses, roll with the punches, and age your money. People who internalize the rules report life-changing money clarity. People who try and bounce report it as a chore. Capi takes the other route. You log what happened, Capi categorizes, the dashboard shows runway and pace, and a chat advisor answers questions. No envelopes, no jobs, no rolling. If you respect rules, YNAB wins. If rules become friction, Capi wins.

Can each import bank statements automatically?

YNAB has Direct Import in the US, UK, and Canada via Plaid + similar. Outside those countries you upload OFX or CSV by hand. Capi has no Direct Import anywhere. Capi accepts CSV and PDF statement uploads from any bank globally, parses installments (parcela, cuota, rata, installment) automatically, and deduplicates against existing transactions using source_row_hash. The trade-off honest: if your US/UK/Canada bank is on YNAB's Direct Import list, YNAB feels more automatic. If you bank in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, or any country YNAB does not cover, Capi handles your statements where YNAB cannot.

Where does YNAB simply win?

Community size and teaching material. YNAB has 18+ years of compounding content, a Reddit community of 200k+ that answers questions in minutes, a podcast, in-app tutorials, and a body of YouTube creators teaching the method. Capi is six months old. We have not earned that yet. If you are the kind of person who learns best from a community of practitioners, YNAB is the answer for now, even at the higher price. Native iOS and Android apps that mirror the web are also a YNAB strength. Capi requires Telegram.

Where does Capi simply win?

Input speed via chat or voice. Multi-currency natively. Telegram-first means no separate app to install and no notification fatigue. Free tier that is permanent. Couples at $99 per year (less than half YNAB's per-person annual). Parcela / cuota / rata parsing that LATAM users genuinely need and no global tracker handles. Photo-receipt OCR that extracts installments automatically. A chat advisor that answers questions in seven languages.

Which one should you actually choose?

Choose YNAB if envelope methodology, US/UK/Canada bank sync, and the community matter most. Choose Capi if cost, multi-currency, chat-first input, and couple-affordable pricing matter most. There are people for whom either choice would be wrong, and there are people for whom either would work. The dimension that usually decides it: do you respect rules or do you bounce off them?
